The picture to the right was caught by one of the security cameras in the canyon. And you all thought there were no more bears in the canyon. Just kidding, it's only Beauty!

11/17/11 - A couple of weeks ago another large oak tree fell, blocking the road and stranding many hikers. The Forest Service responded and made quick work of the tree. Click for a larger view:

10/31/11 - I've received a few requests from folks who would like to rent cabins. I've explained that many are in rustic condition and are a far cry from the Ritz. Some people are undeterred and actually prefer a rustic experience. Cabin owners, your thoughts on this? We can discuss possible ramifications at the November meeting.

10/30/11 - Many thanks to the firefighters from Station 18 who came up to the fire drill on Sunday to support our volunteers. We appreciate their input and thank them for the t-shirts they purchased!

9/3/11 - Please click here to read some information and view a photo of Gertrude when she servicing Laguna Beach, circa 1969.

8/8/11 - A Husky dog was spotted abandoned and roaming the canyon.

8/5/11 - Two upcoming events sponsored by the FS:

Saturday, September 17  Inner-Coastal & Watershed Clean-up

Trails4All is again spearheading the Watershed cleanup events throughout Orange County.

The Forest Service effort will be on the forest in Trabuco Canyon. We will need a driver & assistant for the stakeside truck to haul debris (volunteers with a federal license). We have been asked to remove the debris from a burned out cabin in Holy Jim and would also like some volunteers to walk along the creek within the forest boundary and remove debris. Trash can be bagged and piled along the road for pickup. Great way to spend a morning! Will have registration check-in at the forest boundary beginning at 8:30 AM. Supplies will be provided.

7/21/11 - Trabuco Creek road has been designated a public road by the County of Orange. As such, it is now subject to maintenance and vehicular enforcement. Click here for more information on the history of the road.

6/27/11 - Congratulations to Orange County Historian and former cabin owner, Jim Sleeper. Jim was voted an honorary member of the Holy Jim Volunteer Fire Department.

6/26/11 - California Fire Museum Newsletter. There is some information regarding the Fire Museum at the Great Park.

6/26/11 - Many thanks to Dunn Edwards Paint (Santa Ana) for donating the "Fire Barn" green paint for our fire tank! The HJVFD also wishes to thank the volunteers who assisted with the drill on Sunday. Two new volunteers attended the drill, Trey and Nick.

6/12/11 - We saw this rattlesnake on the drive out of the canyon today. sadIt was sunning itself on the side of the road. Click for a larger view.

 Did you know?

  • The ashes of a former cabin owner are stored at the Trabuco Canyon General Store.

  • 5 Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs were turned lose in the canyon many years ago. They quickly formed a pack and became adept at hunting deer. Eventually, they were befriended by a canyon resident who used them to protect his cabin.

  • The cabins used to be wired with a rudimentary hand-crank phone system which allowed communications between the cabins. Though now obsolete, some of the cabins still have the old phones.

  • There are (at least) two fictional books that take place in Holy Jim Canyon. One is "Watchers" by Dean Koontz and the other is "Night Rituals" by James P. Blaylock.

Cabin owners - I'm looking to add to this list of interesting tidbits. If you have anything to add, please email me.
